San Juan de La Concepción (La Concha)

San Juan is an area of the La Concha municipality in the Masaya department. It is a small agricultural town, where crops include a variety of fruit trees including oranges, mangoes, avocados and many others. It is located in the foothills of Volcan Masaya, and the volcano is visible from most parts of town. ATRAVES has worked in support of the local secondary school, Instituto San Juan Bautista, by providing volunteers and supporting construction efforts, including a kitchen-classroom. Volunteers have worked in English teaching, light construction, physical and art education, and in health. We have provided volunteers to a local clinic as well. Our homestay family's matriarch, Doña Elba, makes frescos that are (or should be) famous throughout Mesoamerica.
