Managua
Barrio Anexo Camilo Ortega, and Barrio William Galeano, are sections of Managua on the southwestern outskirts of the city. ATRAVES has worked intensively in this area since 2004, and has strong roots in the community. Poverty and extreme poverty are endemic here, particularly in the Barrio Anexo section, a shantytown populated primarily by people displaced after war and economic and natural disasters in the north of the country.
ATRAVES supports, and helped to found Escuela H.D., a neighborhood school that offers preschool through sixth grade education to children from the area. Escuela H.D. is the only financially attainable educational option for most of its students, given the lack of public schools in the area. The school offers many parallel services, including adult literacy, free meals and health services. We are currently planning to found a health center in the community. Most ATRAVES volunteers visit Barrio Camilo Ortega at some point in their stay.
